Who are we?

We are Cath & John Tate, known as the Hypno-Tates, a man and wife team who use hypnosis to help you deal with Grief and Anxiety, Trauma, stress, PTSD, stopping smoking, weight loss, fears, phobias, and men's health. We specialize in Grief and Anxiety after we lost our son aged 19 to suicide and struggled to find the support we needed.

We can work individually or together if needed to help you find the solutions you need to move forward in your life. We are flexible and give you a choice of male or female therapists. We are based in Carlisle, Cumbria, but work globally over Zoom to give you support and therapy without leaving home or you can attend face-to-face appointments, whichever you prefer.

We are interested in listening to you and trying to help you understand how past experiences, often from childhood, affect life now and the way in which they lead you to view yourself.

This can be acheived by what is called "Content Free Therapy" should it be necessary, this basically means, there is no need to revisit past trauma in order to resolve issues, this is done using various techniques.

Our goal is to create a safe therapeutic environment for you to feel emotional freedom. We also want to hear about your hopes for future.

There is not one particular point in life when people turn towards a therapist, however it is often when confronted by the sense of stuck feelings or being unable to define and find meaning in life.

Significant events such as a bereavement and or a loss, relationship issues, mental or physical abuse, questioning who you are, or feeling lost are very common reasons for seeking a therapist. Depression and anxiety are often prevalent in such circumstances and very difficult to get over alone, that is where we come in for you.
Beginning therapy and moving through the process can be daunting as it often brings up difficult or painful emotions and memories.

It is our job to support you gently and safely in the processes of self-discovery, recovery, healing, and growth.
We deeply respect each and every one of our clients and feel honoured to be able to have an important part in each of their lives.

Hypnotherapy can support men in a variety of ways, helping with anxiety, depression, relationship or family issues or physical issues such as supporting pain control or improving athletic performance.


Often it is our own relationship with ourselves and how we deal with life’s stresses and challenges for example using food for comfort. Some people struggle with weight from a young age,

What you can expect?

We will fully explain the whole process of hypnosis, induction through to release from it, we will also review your treatment goals prior to session. Then we will decide which method of induction suits your needs, this could be using soothing tone and describe images that create a sense of relaxation, security and well-being as you go into hypnosis, or a rapid induction technique.

When you're in a receptive state, we will suggest ways for you to achieve your goals at a sub-conscious level, such as reducing pain or eliminating cravings to smoke. We may also help you visualize vivid, meaningful mental images of yourself accomplishing your future goals.

When the session is over, either you are able to bring yourself out of hypnosis or we will help you end your state of hypnosis.

Contrary to how hypnosis is sometimes portrayed in movies or on television, you will not lose control over your behaviour while under hypnosis,  you generally remain aware of surroundings and remember what happened during hypnosis.

You may eventually be able to practice self-hypnosis, in which you can induce a state of hypnosis in yourself. You can use this skill as needed — for instance, pain relief or positive mind changing.
